The machine that writes sound
onto a moving ribbon.

A tape machine stores sound as a magnetic imprint on a thin ribbon of tape. As the tape travels from the supply reel to the take-up reel, it passes three heads in turn — erase wipes the tape clean, record writes the new signal, and playback reads it straight back.

Three heads, in tape order

The tape always meets them in the same order — and that order is the answer when the paper asks how tape recording works:

  1. Erase — wipes any earlier signal off the moving tape
  2. Record — writes the new signal onto the oxide as magnetism
  3. Playback — reads the magnetism back a moment later

That playback head sitting after the record head is why you can monitor “off tape” — and why tape echo exists (FIG.003).

What Component 3 wants you to hear

  • C3 is a listening exam — the tape era has audible tells: tape hiss, wow & flutter, and the generation loss that comes from bouncing tracks together. Spec 3.2 Analogue Recording History · the five-eras listening frame
  • Era 2's signature move — bouncing (reduction mixing) on a 4-track — exists because tape tracks were scarce. Every bounce is a copy of a copy: the haze is the sound of the era. Abbey Road 4-track, 1963 · Sgt Pepper was 4-track in 1967
  • Chain technique → sonic outcome for AO3; add one named example (studio, engineer or track) for AO4. C3 mark-scheme habit — the outcome earns the mark, not the date

The trap“Les Paul invented multitrack” — he invented sound-on-sound, which loses a generation every pass. True multitrack (record new parts WITHOUT copying the old ones) is Sel-Sync, 1956: the record head doubles as a playback head so overdubs stay in sync.
