Step 12
Now draw them, name them, say why
Draw two cycles of each waveform on its axes.
Draw with a finger or the mouse. Then show the answers over your drawings to check them.
Check each one: two whole cycles, centred on the line, with the right corners. A sawtooth drawn the other way round (a sudden rise, then a ramp down) is right too.
Name the four shapes
Say it in words
Tick each point your words or drawings make.
On the paper and on a synth: the same controls
The names you may meet
| On the paper | On a synth |
|---|---|
| Waveform | Wave, Shape or Waveform; the wave may be shown as a little picture |
| Sawtooth | Saw |
| Octave | Octave or Oct; on older synths a footage: 16', 8', 4' (8' is the normal pitch, 4' an octave up) |
| Level | Level, Volume or Amp |
| Noise | Noise, or white noise |
In Live's Operator, each oscillator's Wave menu has a sine, a sawtooth, a square, a triangle and noise.
The synth panel is our own drawing, in the exam's names. Its picture and the sound come from the same numbers: every wave you hear is built here from the harmonics the bars show. Made for a laptop or the whiteboard.
