Step 11
Now say it: carrier and modulator
Explain how FM synthesis makes its sound. Name the carrier and the modulator, and say what the modulator's Level, its Ratio and an envelope on its Level each do to the tone.
The synth is beside you under For reference. Start each line with its opening words.
Tick each point your lines make.
On the paper and on a synth: the same controls
The names you may meet
| On the paper | On a DAW's FM synth, such as Live's Operator |
|---|---|
| Carrier | The oscillator at the bottom of the algorithm (A): the one you hear |
| Modulator | An oscillator above it in the algorithm (B), feeding into it |
| FM amount, modulation index, depth | The modulator's Level |
| Ratio (modulator : carrier) | Coarse (whole numbers) and Fine (in between) |
| Envelope on the modulator | The modulator's own envelope (its Decay) |
| Algorithm | How the oscillators are wired: which ones modulate which |
Each oscillator has its own envelope: on the carrier it shapes the volume, on a modulator the brightness.
The synth panel is our own drawing, in the exam's names. Its picture and the sound come from the same numbers: two sine oscillators made here in your browser, the modulator's output bending the carrier's pitch. The waveform and the harmonics are worked out from the same settings. Made for a laptop or the whiteboard.
